Clevedon's Flower Show since 1869

Clevedon Horticultural Society was formed in 1869, and its first ever show produced the magnificent sum of £23. (£23. 6s. 6d to be precise!!)

The shows over the years have been held at Clevedon Court, Herbert Gardens, Salthouse Fields, The Community Centre and the YMCA Hall.

The society has always maintained a high standard of exhibits, and has been affiliated to the Rose, Chrysanthemum, Dahlia, Gladiolus Societies as well as the Royal Horticultural Society and the National Vegetable Society. In the early years we were also affiliated to The Sweet Pea Society.

Our trophy list also gives a considerable insight into the history of Clevedon itself. Names of companies no longer in existence, but which had their roots in Clevedon include Hale Trent Cakes Ltd, Cam Gears Ltd, Engineering Productions (Better known as Ampep PLC and SKF Aerospace – Clevedon Division), Owen Evans, Owen Gulliford etc, etc. The names of Clevedonians involved in the society are also well represented in street names in the town today. Messrs Pizey, Braikenridge, Bees, Elton, Hoddell, Dawes and Gulliford.

In 2025 it was decided that we would change our name to 'Clevedon Show' to better describe the event which has grown from a having focus on flowers and vegetables to include a wide range of handicrafts, baking, art and entertainment.

Today we run a two day show on the Salthouse Fields with championship classes in Roses, Chrysanths, Dahlias, Gladioli, Pot Plants, Fuchsias and Vegetable together with a further 200 classes covering everything from the common garden flower to the best jams and cakes, photographs, craft, wine etc, etc.

The float is part of a parade, with people sitting and standing along the street observing the spectacle. The colors of the flowers range from vibrant yellows to deep pinks and reds. The setting appears festive and lively.
